Gravity Walls - a basic wedge shaped retaining wall that uses it's own weight to hold back the soil on the backside of the wall. The most common and appropriate use for these type of walls is shorter landscaping walls. Usually these are dry stacked, meaning they have no mortar holding them together. These can be constructed with masonry units, stone or concrete. At taller heights, gravity walls are easy to topple and can be quite dangerous if not properly engineered.
Piling Wall - a type of retaining wall that uses tall narrow pilings for it's support. The pilings are driven deep into the soil. This greatly strengthens the structure and can hold heavy loads with proper soil conditions. Sheet piling and bored piling are two types of piling wall. Sheet piling is used when the soil is soft or when you are in a highly populated area where neighbors are very close by. Bored piling is typically used where the extreme noises created by sheet piling are not allowed. Bored piling for larger projects is also a big undertaking. Contractors will need to use a crane with a drilling rig attached, to bore the hole. A temporary casing is put in place, to allow for the rebar cages and concrete to be placed. After you fill it with concrete, you must remove the tremie pipe and the casing you installed in the beginning.
Cantilevered Walls - these walls are usually constructed with cast in place concrete featuring steel reinforcement. It can also be built with mortared masonry as well. The typical cantilevered wall looks like an upside down "T" shape, with the wall extending in sometimes both directions underground. This uses the load of the soil to reduce pressure directly against the exposed wall. Buttresses are sometimes used for extra strength. Buttressed walls are short triangular "wall supports" if you will that are installed on the back side of the cantilevered wall.
