FOOTING:

Excavation + Pour + Inspections

Footing construction is the first step in building a new home or building. It’s important that you get it right, the first time.

It supports your foundation wall, which in return supports your walls and trusses that are built on top of the foundation wall.

Call us today to get your footing project started, or scroll down to read more information about footings and their purpose.

What exaCTLY is a footing?

And why do I need one?

A footing can be described as an excavated trench that is filled with concrete to a prescribed depth beneath the local frost line. Typically, there are two different types of footings; perimeter and pier.

The perimeter footing is placed where foundation walls will be built, usually around the perimeter of the house blueprint.

A pier footing can be used inside (or outside) of the perimeter footing to support areas where loads are high; known as load points. These are usually square or rectangular in shape and vary in size.

Porches also commonly require pier footings and are located outside of the perimeter footing. A typical size for porch piers is 24″x24″.

Footings are in essence a “foundation” for your foundation. A stick-built home or building is typically framed using wooden trusses and 2×4 walls. These walls are built on top of the masonry foundation wall. This foundation wall sits on top of the footing.

Typical sizes for perimeter footings in NC are 16″ wide and 8″ deep. High wind zones usually call for wider/deeper footings and  also require steel rebar to be placed for reinforcement.

FOUNDATION:

Build + Back-Fill + Clean Up

A great home starts with a great foundation. There are many different ways to build a foundation for your home.

We specialize in crawlspace and monolithic slab foundations which happen to be the most commonly used in North Carolina.

Call us today to get your foundation project started, or scroll down to read more information about foundations and their purpose.

What is a Foundation?

And why do I need one?

A home’s foundation may be the most important component to structural integrity. The footing and foundation is what holds your house up off of the ground.

The most common types of foundations include crawlspace, monolithic slab, and basement foundations. There are different methods for each type.

If you will notice in the photos below, you can see that a foundation wall for a crawlspace foundation is literally a wall built on top of the perimeter footing. Usually this is built with cinder block (cmu) or a combination of cinder block and brick.

Crawlspace foundations usually allow for enough space under your home to be able to “crawl” around to access your mechanical components or to use it as outdoor storage. A vapor barrier installed in a crawlspace helps contain moisture in the ground, instead of through the bottom of your home’s floor.

Monolithic slabs are another type of foundation. They can be defined as a solid concrete slab, with thickened portions to support the load bearing walls and always around the perimeter in lieu of a traditional footing.

Depending on the site, it can be the least expensive foundation that you can build. If your lot is mostly flat, then it is the most practical way to construct a foundation because it requires little to no fill to keep it flat. All of your trades have to be piped up before you pour the slab.

Most new residential subdivisions in the lower to mid price range use monolithic slab foundations because of it’s simplicity and lower cost.

No matter how you build your foundation, if it’s done correctly it will last a life time. We are masonry experts and we have the tools to make that happen for you.

Concrete is very durable and weathers the elements better than bricks, wood, or stone. Call us, contact us, or scroll down below to read more about concrete flatwork.

What is Concrete Flatwork?

Where can I use it on my property?

As stated previously, there are a number of different applications  for concrete including patios, walkways, driveways, garage floors, monolithic slabs and floating slab porches.

Driveways – concrete is strong enough to withstand the heavy weight of vehicles. This makes concrete flat work a perfect solution for a clean looking driveway or parking pad. The pad can be made thicker than normal for heavy equipment parking.

Also to control cracking in the future, expansions joints should be added at spans no greater than 10′. Concrete driveways can also be stained, stamped, or sealed in many different patterns and colors.
